A Chinese export bowl with flared foot, decorated in underglaze blue, and dating from the Kangxi period. The bowl is decorated in underglaze blue with lotus flowers and lotus scrolls with precious objects. On arrival in Europe this bowl has had overglaze iron red enamel and gilding added both to the outside and inside of the bowl to convert it into the fashionable Imari style of decoration. Diameter 11.5cm (4.5")
A striking and attractive decoration which has largely worked in sympathy with the underglaze blue decoration. The enamels were applied either in Holland or in England. The deep tone of the iron red enamel and the decoration with lotus scrolls in reserve against the iron red background is seen on items decorated in England.

This bowl is in excellent undamaged condition. As can be seen, the enamels on the outside of the bowl are in very good condition, although the original gilding is now mostly lost. The enamels in the interior are also in good condition, with some rubbing from use.
